WEB GEMS- Top 7th: Geovany Soto blocked the plate, saving a run!

Chris Sampson delivered 9 solid innings as the Houston Astros defeated the
Chicago (NL) Cubs by the score of 6 to 0 at Wrigley Field.

Houston took the lead for good in the 3rd inning when they tallied 2 runs on 2
hits. That was all the offense they were to need. The pitchers took over
after the 4th inning as neither team was able to score again.

Sampson(1-0) went the distance for the shutout. Rich Hill(0-1) was tagged with
the loss. Houston scored big getting 6 runs off him in 5 innings.

Lou Piniella lamented, 'Sampson was really aggressive today. He kept coming
after our hitters. Heck, why not. he kept sitting our guys down one after
another - like so many bowling pins!'

At Wrigley Field the Chicago (NL) Bruins outscored the Milwaukee Crewsmen 9 to
6.

The difference in the game was the offensive outburst by Chicago (NL) in the
bottom of the 8th inning as they showed no mercy on Milwaukee blasting them
for 5 hits and plating 8 runs. The crucial at-bat was provided by Reed
Johnson who made the home-town crowd a happy bunch when he singled scoring
two baserunners. Kerry Wood was perfect in relief and gained credit for his
1st save.

The win was credited to Jon Lieber(1-0) who went 2 innings allowing no runs.
Salomon Torres(0-1) was tagged with the loss in relief.
